The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
